In an article published by EUalive titled “The Price of Bad Justice: How Bulgaria Keeps Paying for Systemic Flaws”, Bilyana Gyaurova-Wegertseder commented on the growing budgets of Bulgaria’s judiciary and the lack of corresponding results. As quoted by EUalive, she said:
“The increase in spending on the Ministry of Interior and the judiciary without any tangible results is a ticking time bomb. We are neither safer, nor is the judiciary more independent, nor is the prosecution more accountable.”
Gyaurova-Wegertseder also emphasized that the problem is not the level of magistrates’ salaries:
“The issue is not that magistrates receive good salaries. Their remuneration is directly linked to judicial independence.”
At the same time, she criticized the lack of visible progress in the judicial system, stating:
“In recent years, we have not seen positive news coming from the judiciary. We have seen scandals and backstage deals.”
The quotes were published by EUalive in its analysis of the rising costs of Bulgaria’s judicial system and the ongoing concerns about efficiency, accountability, and public trust.
